MWCRE’s Consumer Price Index
Trends in A More Volatile Market
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) tracks out-of-pocket spending by urban consumers and is released mid-month, while the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, preferred by the Federal Reserve, includes broader spending and comes out at the end of the month. CPI focuses on actual consumer expenses, but PCE is more comprehensive. Recent CPI trends show rising inflation, especially from 2021 to 2023 due to supply chain issues. In Utah, rent escalations have shifted, with 3.00%-3.99% annual increases becoming more common between 2021 and 2024.
