June 29, 2021, Salt Lake City, Utah   At nearly 100 years old, California-based restaurant El Cholo was the first Mexican food in Los Angeles. It has since grown into a chain of six restaurants dispersed in Southern California. Soon to be the seventh restaurant in a whole new geographic location, they have just signed a lease in the heart of Sugarhouse on 2166 South and 900 East, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Third-generation owner Ron Salisbury has roots in Utah as Salisbury’s great-grandfather was a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneer who came over from England in 1849 and settled in Utah. His subsequent generations migrated to Arizona and California, and they’ve been in California for over 100 years. However, Utah has remained a part of the family with Salisbury attending Brigham Young University in the 1950s and his daughter currently residing in the state.

Now in its fourth generation of leadership, son Brendon and father Ron are excited to be opening a restaurant in a prominent area of Salt Lake City. “Utah as a whole, particularly, Salt Lake City has had incredible growth that I have seen with my own eyes in the last decade; the influx of new industries and development has made Utah one of the most interesting markets in the country. We are excited about bringing our food and service to Salt Lake,” said the Co-owner of El Cholo Brendon Salisbury.

Mountain West Commercial Real Estate’s agent Stephanie Buranek supported the Salisburys in their search for the restaurant. “We have pretty specific requirements for real estate that can be very difficult to find. Thankfully Stephanie was able to find a perfect match for us, now all that is left is to start construction of the blank canvas and turn it into El Cholo,” said Salisbury. The over 9,000 square foot property offers roof and front deck seating in the heart of Sugarhouse across from Smith’s Grocery, Este Pizzeria, and Sugarhouse BBQ and walking distance from Trax’s S line.

“I’m 88 years old and not even in my home state and I feel like I’m starting over again, it feels like being a kid. I’m excited to see what our brand will do here in Utah,” said Ron Salisbury.

El Cholo is projected to open in the Fall of 2022 stay tuned for more details here.
